WHAT IS ENGLISH COUNTRY DANCING?
(adapted from writings of Alan Winston and Gene Murrow)
English country dancing (ECD) is an accessible and popular form of community social dance enjoyed by people all over the world. If you’ve ever watched “Pride and Prejudice” on tv, or seen “Sense and Sensibility” or “Emma” at the movies, you’ve seen ECD. But don’t think of ECD as an obscure relic of the past. ECD is still thriving today, with hundreds of new dances and tunes in English country dance style having been composed by English, American, and European choreographers in the past 30 years.
WHY DO PEOPLE LOVE ECD SO MUCH? For many, it's the music - beautiful tunes taken from old ballads, modern and classical music. Others love ECD for its simple movements and beautiful patterns. Through it all, there's an indefinable quality to ECD that makes it energizing, mesmerizing, and just plain fun.
ECD IS ACCESSIBLE AND NO DANCE PARTNER OR DANCE EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY! Each dance is taught and prompted by a caller and you can come by yourself and be assured of dancing. ECD dances are social and friendly, and the atmosphere is informal. No special clothing is needed, other than clean, soft-soled shoes or sneakers.
